What Examiners Look For

Every IELTS Speaking response is assessed against four equally weighted criteria. Understanding them transforms how you prepare.

Fluency & Coherence

Speak without long or frequent pauses. Link your ideas naturally so the listener can follow your meaning without effort.

Lexical Resource

Use a wide range of vocabulary accurately and appropriately. Avoid repeating the same words and phrases throughout.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Mix simple and complex sentence structures correctly. Errors are acceptable as long as they do not impede communication.

Pronunciation

Be clear and easy to understand throughout. Your accent does not matter — clarity and natural stress patterns do.
